The short version

Eden Index has no user accounts, no login, and no sign-up. The app doesn't ask for your location. It doesn't include any analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting software. Its own network destination is our API at edenindex.clerkofeden.com/api, which is unauthenticated, so nothing you do in the app is tied to an identity we hold. The one exception is a county or city's own website: a place's page may show an image hosted by that local government, and a link there opens that website in your browser (see "Government websites" below).

The rest of this page explains that in detail and covers the ordinary things any website does, like keep web server logs.

What we don't collect

What stays on your device

If you create a custom weighting or save a list of places, that's stored locally on your device in a local database. It is never sent to our servers — we have no way to see it, back it up, or restore it if you delete the app. That's also why it doesn't sync between devices.

What our API sees

When the app needs data we don't ship on-device — raw indicator values, the hazard breakdown, recreation sites, basemap imagery — it requests it from edenindex.clerkofeden.com/api (app versions before 1.4.0 use api.clerkofeden.com, which serves the same data and follows the same rules). That request is an ordinary HTTPS request: it carries your IP address (as every internet request does), a timestamp, the specific endpoint requested (for example, a county's detail page), and your device's user-agent string. It does not carry a name, an email address, an account identifier, or your location.

Our web and API servers keep standard access logs — the information above — for approximately 14 days for operational purposes: diagnosing problems, rate-limiting abusive traffic, and keeping the service available. After that, logs are rotated away and not kept.

Third parties

Static files (map tiles and published data artifacts) are served from a cloud object storage bucket (DigitalOcean Spaces) rather than directly from our own servers. That provider sees the same ordinary request information — IP address, timestamp, the file requested — that any file host sees when it serves a file, under its own standard hosting practices. We don't send it anything beyond that.

Apart from the local government websites described under "Government websites", we don't use any other third-party service that receives data about how you use the app.

Government websites

Eden Index is an independent app. It does not represent any government entity and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any government agency. A place's page may link to that county or city's own website. Every such link first asks you to confirm that you are leaving Eden Index, then opens the website in your device's browser. That website is run by the local government, not by us, and its own privacy policy applies once you are there. We receive nothing about the visit.

A place's page may also show a header image hosted by that local government's website. Your device fetches the image directly from that website's servers, which see your IP address, a timestamp, and the image requested, as any website does. We do not see or receive that request.

Children's privacy

Eden Index isn't directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13. Since the app collects no accounts, no location, and no personal information from anyone by design, there is nothing to be collected in the first place.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page. We'd only expect that to happen if the app's data practices actually change — for example, if a future version added an account system, this page would be rewritten to describe it before that version shipped.
